Vietnam Airlines & Jetstar Pacific among world’s safest
National flag carrier Vietnam Airlines and budget carrier Jetstar Pacific have recently received a full seven-star safety assessment from safety and product ratings agency Airline Ratings and now count among the world’s safest airlines. Assessing 435 global airlines, rankings are based on certification from the IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) and the eight audit parameters of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
It sets the standards and regulations necessary for aviation safety, security, efficiency, and regularity, as well as for aviation environmental protection. It has eight audit parameters that pertain to safety: Legislation, Organization, Licensing, Operations, Airworthiness, Accident Investigation, Air Navigation Service, and Aerodromes.
If the country meets between six and eight of the audits one star is awarded to the airline. Five secures half a star. However, if any of the criteria are below the average by less than 5 per cent it is considered a pass. If the country only meets up to four criteria no star is given. In addition, a star is given if the airline maintained a fatality-free record for the past ten years. The two airlines meet all the criteria to be ranked on the same list as well-known global airlines such as Singapore Airlines, British Airways, American Airlines, and Emirates.
“For a long time, Vietnam Airlines has been an important part of the economy of Vietnam,” said Mr. Geoffrey Thomas, Director of Airline Ratings. “The airline has a very modern fleet of Airbus and Boeing aircraft and operationally is now up there with the very best.” In the past year, Vietnam Airlines has successfully built a management system that can predict possible risks for timely prevention. Last year it safely carried out 140,000 flights and transported nearly 22 million passengers.
Meanwhile, Jetstar Pacific met over 800 criteria and received IATA Operational Safety Audit certification in September. It is currently using the SMS-Safety Management System approved by the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam and the International Air Transport Association.
Airline Ratings also ranked airlines services based on meal quality, seating comfort, and entertainment services. Vietnam Airlines was given 6.5 out of 7 stars for the economy, premium economy, and business classes. Jetstar Pacific was given three out of five stars for low-cost airlines.
