Avalon Airport is taking another step forward with its international operations, announcing today a new tie up with dominant Vietnamese new age airline Vietjet Air. The Premier Daniel Andrews today toured Vietjet Air’s headquarters in Ho Chi Minh, together with Avalon Airport Executive Chairman David Fox and Sovico Group Chairman Dr Nguyen Thanh Hung. The Premier witnessed the agreement between Vietjet Air and Avalon Airport for services between Melbourne (Avalon Airport) and Ho Chi Minh. Other Asian destinations are also being considered.

Vietjet Air is the first privately-owned and the largest airline in Vietnam, operating 129 routes covering the major domestics destinations in Vietnam and internationally to India, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Korea, China, Thailand, Myanmar, Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia and Taiwan.

Vietjet Air has carried almost 100 million passengers and is one of the world’s fastest growing airlines. Vietjet has ordered nearly 400 aircraft with total purchases in excess of 50 Billion US. The airline is currently operating one of the world’s most modern aircraft fleet, with more than 400 daily flights.

The Andrews Government has long supported Avalon’s international ambitions with the airport currently operating double daily services to Kuala Lumpur, having commenced international operations in December 2018.

“Over 150,000 Vietnamese people live in Victoria. These new services will provide greater choice for their family and friends to visit our great state to see their loved ones. Furthermore, Vietnam is becoming a popular destination for Australian tourists.” – The Premier said.

“We are delighted with today’s announcement and the confidence of Vietjet in Avalon Airport as a future gateway to Melbourne and Geelong region. Ho Chi Minh City will be the
first Vietnamese connection, but we’ll hope to expand this to other cities, such as Hanoi, Da Nang, in the future” – David Fox said.

Vietjet’s founder company, Sovico Group, also announced today it is establishing its Australian representative office in Melbourne, enabling Sovico Group and Vietjet Air to facilitate more opportunities for trade, investment and tourism between Vietnam and Australia, Victoria.
